Tower Tour<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the exclusive residential district of Weisser Hirsch, the educated middle classes of the GDR seek refuge in nostalgia. Uwe Tellkamp\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Der Turm<\/em>&nbsp;(The Tower) ranks as his best-known work and captures the spirit of East Germany in the years leading up to the demise of the communist regime. The tour visits the original locations, tracks down the characters on which the novel was based and \u2018unlocks\u2019 this roman \u00e0 clef.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Literary greats in Dresden<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This city tour takes an in-depth look at Dresden\u2019s literary heritage. At every stop along the way, a quote from Kafka, Kokoschka, Klemperer, K\u00e4stner (of course), Tellkamp, \u200b\u200bGoethe and ETA Hoffmann, all of whom immortalised the city in their writings over the turbulent course of the centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Poets, thinkers, literary giants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dostoyevsky spent some time in Dresden. Like everywhere else he went, he was down on his luck, but it was also an immensely productive period. The Dichter, Denker, Literaten tour also references Fontane\u2019s illness, Heinrich Mann\u2019s apprenticeship, Casanova\u2019s brother and the great European tour of James Fenimore Cooper, who is better known for his tales of frontiersmen, trappers, and the Last of the Mohicans<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The Erich K\u00e4stner Quarter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">K\u00e4stner looms large in the literary history of the city. The \u2018exhibition\u2019 organised by the K\u00e4stner museum covers the whole district of Dresden Neustadt. It is in the format of a QR code scavenger hunt via smartphone, to be taken at your own pace and following your own individual route \u2013 a sort of \u2018museum without walls\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Little Erich<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;<em>Das Fliegende Klassenzimmer<\/em>&nbsp;(The Flying Classroom), Erich K\u00e4stner tells of his school days.&nbsp;<em>Als ich ein kleiner Junge war<\/em>&nbsp;(When I Was a Little Boy) paints a broader picture of his childhood in early 20th-century Dresden. On this tour, you will find out about the great writer\u2019s hometown, get an insight into the background behind his books and discover who the real Emil was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Kurt Vonnegut<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo it goes\u201d is the recurring response to death in Kurt Vonnegut\u2019s novel&nbsp;<em>Slaughterhouse&nbsp;5.<\/em>&nbsp;This laconic utterance crops up repeatedly in the text. No wonder, because the American author writes not only about extra-terrestrials, time travel and equanimity as a philosophy of life, but above all about being a prisoner-of-war in Dresden during the devastating air raid of February 1945. The Vonnegut tour focuses on the Second World War and ends at the eponymous Erlweinscher Schlachthof \u2013 Slaughterhouse 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Adressess<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cicerone-dresden.de\/\">Cicerone Dresden<\/a>&nbsp;offers a variety of guided tours for individual visitors, families, groups, school classes or seminar groups.<br>Liebigstrasse 11, 01069 Dresden, Tel: +49 (0)351 471 32 24<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/erich-kaestner-viertel.de\/\">Erich-K\u00e4stner-Viertel<\/a>&nbsp;is an initiative of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.erich-kaestner-museum.de\/museum\/neues\/\">Erich-K\u00e4stner-Museum<\/a>.
